May 14, 2007 Meeting Minutes

A special public meeting of the Planning Commission of Alexandria Township was held on the 14th day of May, 2007 at the Alexandria Township Conference Room, 610 Fillmore Street.

 

ROLL CALL: Commission members present were John Knowles, Julie Feuling, Russ Niskanen, Larry Steidl and Lyle Hammerschmidt. Also present was Bonnie Fulghum, Deputy Clerk and Ben Oleson, Township Zoning Admnistrator. As said members formed a quorum and the meeting was called to order by Chairman Knowles at 6:30 p.m.

 

Steidl, seconded by Feuling, made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried unanimously.

 

Niskanen, seconded by Hammerschmidt, made a motion to approve the minutes of the 04/23/07 meeting and the 04/18/07 site visit as written. Motion carried unanimously.

 

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the recommendations from the township’s zoning subcommittee where they propose to amend the Township Zoning Map and related ordinances. Ben Oleson’s presentation included some background material, such as the work completed on the comprehensive plan. He identified land use concerns in the areas of stormwater management and orderly/efficient growth patterns. Proposed zoning guidelines were to 1) limit development along what is classified as “poor” roads; 2) prepare for the expansion of ALASD; 3) protecting natural features; 4) improving the tax base; and 5) limiting conflicts in the various zoning districts. Oleson also advocated setting up an annual review for ordinances, policies and procedures. Chairman Knowles opened the meeting to public comment and discussion by the commission. Oleson stated that the next step will be to conduct a public hearing, the date not having been set.

 

Niskanen asked for an update on the double permitting issue with the City of Alexandria.

 

Being no further business, Feuling, seconded by Steidl, made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
